Whether you are a recent graduate or you are considering a change of career, our programmes will give you the best foundation for a great career in teaching. Working closely with Canterbury Christ Church University we have a proven track record of supporting and bringing new talented teachers into the profession. You will be well supported by experienced teachers in all of our partnership schools.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Shepway Teaching Schools Alliance is looking for high calibre trainee teachers with the skills and commitment to become outstanding teachers and future leaders in the teaching profession.

Primary school requirements
  • 2:2 degree, or above, in a subject specialism relevant to the School Direct programme that you are applying for.
  • GCSE English, Mathematics and Science (or equivalent) at Grade C or above.
  • It is a national requirement that applicants successfully complete the Professional Skills Test in English and Mathematics. The skills tests must be completed within six weeks of a provisional offer being made.
Secondary school requirements
  • 2:2 degree, or above, in a subject specialism relevant to the School Direct programme that you are applying for.
  • A third class degree is now accepted in Computer Science, Maths and Physics (providing candidates have a B grade or above at A level).
  • GCSE English and Mathematics (or equivalent) at Grade C or above.
  • It is a national requirement that applicants successfully complete the Professional Skills Test in English and Mathematics. The skills tests must be completed within six weeks of a provisional offer being made.

Salaried entry requirements necessitate three years industry/work experience

Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE)

Don’t hold back from applying for teacher training in biology, geography, maths, physics, chemistry, computing, design and technology, or a language because of your subject knowledge. You may still be able to train to teach these subjects (and be eligible for the bursaries they attract) by building up or refreshing your existing knowledge with a subject knowledge enhancement programme.

Shepway Teaching Schools may ask you to take an SKE course if they feel you have the right qualities to become a teacher but need to complete additional subject training first. If that’s the case, they’ll offer you a conditional place upon doing an SKE course.

TRAIN TO TEACH

School Direct is a relatively new route into teaching where trainee teachers work in a home school for the majority of their training. There are two routes to go down:

  • School Direct trainee programme
  • School Direct salaried programme
What does our programme look like?

Working closely we work together to ensure that the teachers we educate have the opportunities in both school and university settings to make good progress towards becoming an outstanding teacher. There will be a second placement in a contrasting school within Shepway Teaching Schools, to help you gain a breadth of experience to prepare you for your NQT year.

What support can I expect to get?

You will be assigned a mentor and they will support you throughout the year. Alongside your work in school, Canterbury Christ Church University will provide support in the form of 15 training days, which will enable you to understand the theory behind teaching.

What are our expectations of you inside the classroom?

It is essential that each student teacher is given a timetable which reflects his/her status as a new professional who is just starting out on their career. The timetable should start with a low loading and build up during the course of the year. The following table is a guide to the sort of balance and progression that we would expect to see for student teachers with considerable experience during the year. However, we would also expect the timetable and the balance of activities to reflect the progress of the student teacher; some will make faster or slower progress than others. Student teachers will never be asked to teach more than 80% timetable.

VACANCIES

To apply, go to the UCAS website: www.ucas.com Enter “Shepway Teaching Schools” in the search for provider.

School Direct - Primary

For 2017/18 we have 20 training places on offer across a number of primary schools. Salaried places are extremely limited. You can only apply to Shepway Teaching Schools NOT the individual school. The process is that you apply to Shepway Teaching schools for a primary placement. Once you have applied we will invite you to an interview at Greatstone School and if you are successful we send you a list of all the schools that have engaged with us for school direct. You can then contact your chosen school and arrange an informal meeting. We find this is the best way for students and schools to find the right placement for both.
